India’s EV Sales Cross 2 Million Mark, Led by Two-Wheelers

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market has crossed the milestone of 2 million cumulative sales, driven by strong demand for electric two-wheelers in urban and semi-urban areas. According to data from NITI Aayog, e-scooters accounted for over 60% of total sales, followed by electric cars, buses, and three-wheelers. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi led the way due to targeted subsidies and charging infrastructure. Startups like Ola Electric and Ather Energy captured significant market share, while traditional manufacturers like Hero and Bajaj entered the segment aggressively. EV adoption is also being boosted by corporate fleets and last-mile delivery services. The FAME-II subsidy scheme and reduced GST on EVs helped lower upfront costs. However, concerns about battery safety and charging grid standardization persist. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is reviewing policies to encourage domestic battery manufacturing under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The milestone reflects growing consumer confidence in sustainable mobility.
